Finally, I have put together all the numbers I found into a cross-border population statistics dataset for the Japanese Spitz breed, covering registration data from 10 countries over seven decades (1955–2025).
The dataset, published as an open-access data paper on Zenodo, brings together official registration figures from the Finnish, Swedish, Danish, Norwegian, British, Australian, French, Italian, Dutch, and Japanese kennel clubs into a single, verified, machine-readable format. Every data point is linked to its source document through a full provenance register.
A key contribution is the complete registry of all 57 verified imports from Japan to overseas destinations, the dogs that founded every non-Japan population of the breed. Pedigree analysis of these founders revealed that the 57 exports represent approximately 50 independent genetic contributions, with six full-sibling groups and extensive half-sibling networks among the earliest imports.
The dataset is freely available under a CC BY 4.0 license and is designed for versioned updates as additional country coverage and data become available.
